Gomes: Chiefs had nothing to play for

Simba SC head coach Didier Gomes says they are under no illusions over the challenge of Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Champions League quarter-final.

Chiefs host the Tanzania Premier League champions in the first leg of their quarter-final showdown as underdogs after a dismal run of two wins in 15 DStv Premiership games.

However, Gomes says their resilience in the competition this season suggests the squad's focus has been away from the domestic scene after a historic campaign in Africa's elite club competition.

"You know we consider Kaizer Chiefs as a big team, we cannot underrate this team because we have organised a lot of video sessions with my players and we know very well that they can be very efficient," Gomes explained.

"Their position in the league, I think they have nothing to play for over the last few weeks, they cannot go to the podium, they cannot be relegated - so I think they've only focused on the Champions League.

"They will be dangerous, I don't know if [their poor form] is an advantage but we are ready to fight, we're confident in our abilities."

While Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt highlighted that many of his players are more suited for Champions League football rather than the South African top-flight - Gomes says he has full faith that his squad who ousted reigning champions Al Ahly will be able to advance to the next round.
